Jennifer Perkins is offering an incredible opportunity to learn from her own experiences in the craft business world, sharing valuable information in her Crafty Business Seminar designed to take your casual crafting or small craft business to the next level. This hugely popular seminar is divided into three sections: Start Up, Marketing and Taking It to the Next Level.
Starting Your Crafty Business Did you know you could have your own craft business up and running in under an hour? Signing up for Etsy is that easy. Or do you think a traditional website is the right angle for you? May take a little longer, but it is not a whole lot trickier. Once you have your business all set up the next steps are letting the world know, networking and making some sales. This class will you give the run down on getting started!
Marketing Your Crafty Business The success of your business is 40% what you make and 60% how you market it. Not yet signed up for Twitter? Don’t have a blog? Not swapping swag with other crafters? You could be missing out on easy, crucial and often free ways to promote your crafty business. Whether you knit booties or solder jewelry this class will help you understand the best avenues to market your small business. (Instructor: Jennifer)
Taking Your Crafty Business to the Next Level Things are running along smoothly with your small crafty business, but you want to know what else the world has to offer. How do people get product lines, book deals and TV shows? There is no secret formula, but Jennifer Perkins has experience in all three areas and will tell you what she knows.

Beginning Millinery: Blocked Felt Cloche
In this two-class series, you will learn how to block a basic free-form or draped cloche hat using traditional millinery blocking techniques. In the first class, students will shape a fur felt hood (no, not the kind attached to a garment) over a balsa utility block using a millinery steamer. The technique allows for a wide range of design possibilities.
Note: The first class may be a shorter session of approximately 2-1/2 hours, allowing time for an intro to blocking terms and techniques, a demonstration, then individual blocking by the students. Forms will then need to be baked and allowed to cool; therefore we'll have to wait until the second class to continue our projects.
During the second session, students will remove their hats from the blocks, insert the head-size ribbons, design and cut the brims, then finish the cloches with any desired trims. Please bring along any ribbons, brooches, buttons, feathers, etc. to personalize your design. Previous hand sewing skills strongly recommended but not required.
Important: Students must select a color for their hat no later than 10 days before classes begin (Monday, March 23). Color choices will be emailed to you upon registration.

Beginning Millinery: Feather Fascinator
Feather fascinators have been all the rage in the UK and Australia for several years and are finally beginning to catch on here. A fascinator is less substantial than a hat – a small whimsy of feathers or flowers that attaches with a comb, clip, or headband. In this class, you will make your own fascinator and learn basic millinery techniques, with a focus on feathers trims. You will also become familiar with common trade terms, tools, and materials. Some previous sewing skills helpful but not required.
All materials, including fascinator base, feathers, and combs will be provided by the instructor for a most reasonable fee. A millinery steamer and variety of balsa blocks and canvas wig heads will be available for use. Feel free to bring along any sparkling adornments, such as Swarovski crystals, small beaded appliques, or vintage jewelry/buttons to personalize your design.

You will build a buckram and wire frame, then cover it with fashion fabric and a lining. The second hat will be a blocked buckram cocktail hat, constructed with basic blocking methods. It will be finished with wire and bias edging. We will discuss common millinery trade terms, tools, and materials. Previous hand sewing skills strongly recommended but not required.
The instructor will provide millinery materials including buckram, #19 wire, bias French elastic, and Hymark thread. *Roman Shades*
I’ve had many requests for some home décor classes, but the studio is too tiny for large scale projects. In this class we will make 18”X24” small scale model roman shades in two varieties—unstructured and slatted so that you will have the skills to make full scale shades for your home.
Since these are practice shades, I encourage you to use the absolute cheapest fabric you can find that is of a medium weight. You could use canvas, drapery weight decorator fabrics, anything that has no stretch and has some body to it--(not too thin or sheer). Try the bargain tables at Hancock & JoAnn's or...gulp...WalMart. Ideally the lining fabric would be a different color from the shade fabric so that they're easy to tell apart. I'll talk about/show linings for the true shades in class.

*Serger 101*
Are you scared of your serger? Maybe I can help!
The serger is a versatile machine that helps give your garments a professional and durable finish. It's supposed to make sewing easier, but it can be rather intimidating with all of it's knobs and complicated threading. This beginner's serger class will help take some of the fear out of using your own serger and help you find easier ways to get the results you want.
In this class you will
- learn the simplest ways to thread the serger
- learn about differential feed control
- learn about thread tension
- learn how to do a rolled hem, 3 thread overlock, 4 thread overlock and 3 thread overedge.
